Setting up your aquarium

First you need to decide if you are getting freshwater or saltwater fish. Freshwater fish are cheaper and need less space then saltwater fish.If by chance you are getting saltwater, it is advisable that you have at least 2 gallons of water per fish.If you are getting freshwater, you will only need 1 gallon of water per fish. So say if you had a 10 gallon tank, for saltwater fish you would only be able to get 5 fish maximum. If it were freshwater, you would be able to contain 10 fish maximum.

Now here is some information on the things you will need to start your aquarium.

Gravel

Place it evenly across the tank. Most pet stores or just some regular stores sell fish gravel. It comes in a variety of colors.

Installing equipment

If you have a tank anywhere from 5+ gallons you should place a filter in the aquarium, 4 or less gallons should not need this but require more water changes considering their small size. There are filters for certain sizes. If you get a filter that needs a filter cartridge than all petstores (or some regular)have filter cartridges. Make sure to get the correct size! Some stores carry small filters that don't even need filter cartridges!

Water

You should put in distilled water, purified water, or regular water. if you use regular water be sure to go to any pet store and find the stuff to declorify it.

Plants

Go to any pet store and heavily plant your aquarium with tons of water plants. Some fish love to snack on them! Also some shy or small fish feel more secure in them and are less stressed out and prone to disease.

When your done go ahead and turn the filter on. For best results wait about 24 hours before you put the fish in.

If you have tropical fish you should have the following things:

  • a Filter
  • a Heater
  • Lighting
  • a hood
  • Gravel
  • Gravel Vacuum
  • Algae magnet(unless you have a plocostumus or an algae eater)

As long as you have all these things and keep changing the filter every 2-4 weeks, you shouldn't have a problem.Always clean your tank with a gravel Vac at lseast 1-2 times every month. If you have poor water quality you should probably change the filter and clean your tank out before your fish get sick. If they get sick you can check my fish disease page.
