How to feed bettas

In nature bettas subsist almost entirely on insects and insect larvae. They are made with an upturned mouth so they can snatch their food from the surface.Bettas prefer live food such as brine shrimp, daphia, plankton, tubifex, glassworm, and beef heart. But they can adapt to frozen foods , flake foods, or another excellent choice is bloodworms.

How to breed bettas

Bettas have short lifespans. They live to be about 2-4 years if they are healthy and happy. If you want baby bettas, first you should put a male and a female in separate bowls and wait a day or two. After that you can put them in a community tank or a two gallon tank and wait for a few more days. Then if you have them in a community tank put them in a 2-3 gallon tank and then leave them alone and feed them healthy foods and keep the temperature at a comfortable 80 degrees or slightly above. After a few days or months (depending on your bettas),they will make a bubble nest above the water and they will circle around eachother under the bubble nest for minutes. When they start making bubblenests, you should put them in a tank with no water movement because this could pop the nest very easily. After a few minutes the female will release her eggs, and you don't have to worry, soon after that you should remove the female and leave the male to tend to his young. He will put the eggs in the bubblenest. Soon after 2-3 days the eggs will hatch and the fry can't swim yet, so they will feed off the yolk of their eggs and if any fry fall out of the nest the male will put them back. After days the fry will be free swimming and then you should remove the male. Also at this time you can put the fry in a net breeder or you can put them in their own aquarium. But you want to keep an eye on the male. Some male bettas are just crappy fathers and will eat the eggs. But of course you can't remove him because once their out they are fertilized and begin to sink. Without him to put them in the bubblenest (or eat them) the eggs will sink and rot. So either way, if you have a crappy father you aren't getting any fry.Female and male bettas are most successful as breeders when they are young about 6 months. About the time they are sold in pet stores.

Here is an example of what your bubble nest should look like over time.

Here is a pic of what they will do. This is when they cirle and don't worry if your female lays on her back for a while. As long as the eggs are coming out she's fine. But make sure the female is not too small or when they circle, the male could accidentally crush her to death.Remember, lost scales and frayed fins are normal for a female fish undergoing the breeding process.

Here is the anatomy of a male betta. The female betta's anatomy is exactly the same except her fins are much smaller. Also the female betta has a ovipositor or an "egg spot".
